Printer Paper Jam Fix: Prevention & Step-by-Step Removal

Paper jams are the most common printer problem across all brands. Pulling paper the wrong way can damage your printer. Here is how to remove paper jams safely and prevent them from happening again.

How to Remove a Paper Jam

Step 1: Turn Off the Printer Never pull paper while the printer is on. The rollers can tear the paper and push small pieces deeper inside.

Step 2: Check the Paper Tray Open the paper tray and look for crumpled or stuck paper. Gently pull it out in the direction the paper normally feeds — never pull backward.

Step 3: Open All Access Panels Open the front cover, rear cover, and any access panels. Check the entire paper path from tray to output. Use a flashlight to spot small torn pieces.

Step 4: Check the Rear Access Many printers have a rear door specifically for jam removal. Open it and check for paper stuck near the fuser (the heated roller).

Step 5: Remove Torn Pieces If paper tore, use tweezers to carefully remove small pieces. Even tiny fragments can cause repeated jams.

Step 6: Restart and Test Close all panels, turn the printer on, and print a test page to confirm the jam is cleared.

• Incorrect paper loading: Paper not aligned with the guides, or tray overloaded
• Wrong paper type: Using paper that’s too thick, too thin, or too glossy for your printer
• Worn rollers: Rubber pick-up rollers lose grip over time
• Humidity: Damp paper sticks together and jams more easily
• Damaged paper: Wrinkled or curled sheets catch in the paper path

Prevention Tips

• Fan the paper before loading to separate sheets
• Don’t exceed the paper tray capacity line
• Store paper in a dry, flat location
• Replace worn pick-up rollers every 50,000 pages
• Use the correct paper type setting in your print driver
• Clean rollers periodically with a damp lint-free cloth
